Here at Scents in Zen we encourage you to enjoy your favourite fragrance products whilst also ensuring the safety of yourself and others around you. This page is intended to inform you on the safest ways to enjoy your products.

Candle Safety

  • Always put candles and oil burners on a heat resistant surface.
  • Ensure your candle is placed in a secure, firm holder to prevent it falling.
  • Keep away from fabrics such as curtains and furniture.
  • Keep away from draughts.
  • Keep in a well ventilated area.
  • Avoid placing under shelves. Always make sure there's a distance of at least 1 metre between the candle and any surface above it.
  • Keep away from clothes and hair.
  • Keep out of reach from children and pets.
  • Keep candles apart by making sure there's a distance of at least 10cm between burning candles.
  • Ensure votive or scented candles are kept in heat-proof containers (as they melt to release its fragrance).
  • Do not move while burning. Make sure the candle is extinguished before moving.
  • Don't let anything fall into candles (e.g match sticks).
  • Avoid getting wax on fabric as it may stain.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish candles before leaving the room or before going to sleep. Never leave a burning candle in a child's bedroom.
  • Use a candle snuffer or spoon to extinguish (it's safer than blowing, which can project sparks and hot wax).
  • Ensure a candle is completely out after it has been extinguished (as they can smoulder and reignite).
  • Remove any plastic packaging before use.

Wax Melt Safety (Traditional Oil Burner)

  • The tealights should be used cautiously with the candle safety information given above
  • Do not add water to hot wax.
  • Hot wax can cause burns to the skin.
  • Do not ingest- seek medical attention immediately if ingested.
  • Keep burner out of reach from children and pets.
  • Keep in a well ventilated area.
  • Keep away from draughts.
  • Do not leave a lit burner unattended. Ensure it is extinguished before leaving the room or before falling asleep. Do not leave unattended in a child's bedroom.
  • Remove any plastic packaging before use.
  • Use 1 melt at a time if using a small oil burner.
  • Avoid getting wax on fabric, as it may stain.
  • Do not move burner while the candle is still lit and the wax is still liquid.
  • Oil burner may become very hot and cause injury.
  • Ensure wax melts are stored in a place out of reach from children and pets (they may be mistaken for food).
  • Do not discard melted wax by pouring into drains.

Wax Melt Safety (Electric Burner)

  • Each electric burner should be safely tested before use.
  • Do not add water to the melting dish.
  • Do not leave on while unattended.
  • Do not use wooden or metal objects to clean wax from the melting dish.
  • Ensure the melting dish is not cracked or chipped.
  • Do not remove wax until it has cooled.
  • Do not use with fragrance oil.
  • Do not use electric burner for more than 3 hours at a time.

Essential Oils

  • Avoid using undiluted essential oils unless in emergencies (like burns, cuts and insect bites).
  • Do not apply to sensitive areas, such as around the eyes and ears.
  • Do not use undiluted oils on children under the age of 3.
  • Keep away from pets.
  • Do not diffuse certain oils around pets as it can cause poisoning- see Notice for Pet Owners for more information.

  • Do not ingest unless instructed to do so by a health professional.
  • Certain essential oils are photosensitive and therefore should be avoided during sun exposure.
  • Essential oils may act as an irritant if used for too long or at high concentrations.
  • Certain essential oils may cause toxicity- ensure the oils you intend to use are safe before use.
  • Oils are flammable and should be kept from fire, naked flames or any other sources of ignition.

Incense Safety

  • Use with caution as incense can become very hot when burning.
  • Can damage any surfaces and fabrics that are not heat-proof.
  • Always place incense burner on a heat-proof surface. A hot burner can damage/discolour wood and shatter glass surfaces.
  • Ensure you're using an appropriate burner if you're using charcoal disks with non-combustible incense/resin. Charcoal can get VERY hot!
  • Use sand/ash in your burner when burning charcoal disks to improve heat resistance and prevent damage to any surfaces/containers.
  • Make sure all incense ash falls on a fire-proof surface. Hot ash may damage surfaces and act as a fire hazard.
  • Place incense burner in a location where it won't come into contact with anything.
  • Place burning incense away from fabrics and flammable materials (such as curtains, cushions, etc.)
  • Keep incense burner away from open windows and draughty areas.
  • Do not hang anything above burning incense. It may act as a fire hazard and cause discolouration.
  • Keep incense (both lit and unlit) out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Burn incense in a ventilated area.
  • Never leave burning incense unattended. Extinguish incense before leaving a room or falling asleep. Do not leave in a child's bedroom.
  • Ash can remain hot for hours after the incense has finished burning and therefore may reignite. Make sure the ash has cooled down completely before putting in the bin.
  • To extinguish, break off the burning end, dip it in water, or bury it in sand or ash. For charcoal, use tweezers to remove the burning embers and discard in water.
  • Check with a health professional before using incense if you're asthmatic, suffer from any respiratory difficulties, are prone to seizures or if you have suffered from a stroke.
  • Consult a health professional before use if pregnant or nursing.
  • Do not burn incense while under the influence of mind altering substances.
  • Some people find certain herbs to have mind altering effects, check the effects of your incense and avoid use before driving.
  • Do not take internally.
