Essential Oils Guide

An Introduction into Fragrance

The use of perfume bottles dates back to 1000 BC in Ancient Egypt, who were followed by the ancient Chinese, Greeks, Romans and more. Initially used to distinguish nobility, fragrances were used in religious rituals and were believed to have purifying and cleansing properties, so they were used as a form of driving away pestilence. Now, in modern times, perfumes are a popular accessory, used to enjoy as well as expressing one's taste and personality. Did you know though, that fragrances have a powerful effect on emotions and memories? Certain scents improve or worsen moods, promote relaxation and stimulation, some are even known to be aphrodisiacs!

The Science of Scents

When you inhale a scent, it is detected by chemical receptors in the nose, which then send signals to the olfactory cortex of the brain. The olfactory cortex is essential for perceiving and processing odours and is a component of the limbic system- a system that processes memories, survival instincts and emotion.

The olfactory system also has links between other components of the limbic system, such as the amygdala (involved in forming emotional responses and memories), the hippocampus (which sorts and stores memories) and the hypothalamus (a component that regulates emotional responses). The limbic system therefore links senses - in this case, scent- to memories and emotions. The sense of smell however, has the strongest link as the nerves of the olfactory system link directly to the limbic system, unlike the nerves of other senses. What's more, your emotions can influence your perceptions of scent!

Scents don’t just affect your mind though, certain components of essential oils, when inhaled, ingested or applied topically, can help improve some health conditions! Scents in Zen have been fascinated by this, and therefore have created an informative list of different essential oils and their uses! You can use this gift as a guide to find what specific scents would suit you best!
